Storage Procedure - How to Store your Lithionics Battery

Modified on Mon, 9 Sep at 12:09 PM

Customers often ask how to store their Lithionics Battery when not in use for prolonged time periods, for example when their RV or Boat is not being used during winter season.

NOTE: Below procedure applies to all batteries with Internal BMS and newer External BMS V9 (NDV9). If you have an older External BMS V8 (NDV8) please refer to the 2nd PDF attached below, which includes an extra step to disconnect the main BMS power connector for long term storage.

Storage Duration

•    <1 Month: Charge the battery to 100% State of Charge (SOC) and power off the battery*.

•    >1 Month: Charge the battery to 50 - 80% SOC and power off the battery*. Repeat this every 6 months.

•    When ready to use, charge the battery to 100% SOC and use it normally.

Storage Conditions

•    Do not store the battery at extreme temperatures below -4°F or above 122°F (below -20°C or above 50°C).

•    Do not store the battery in direct sunlight.

•    Do not store the battery in the presence of standing water in the battery compartment.

•    Do not store the battery with trickle charging or solar charging operational.

•    Follow your vehicle manufacturer's storage guidelines.

•    Storing your battery outside of this procedure can affect its performance and usable lifetime.

•    To guarantee your battery's warranty coverage, please adhere to these guidelines.

*Refer to your battery system user guide on power operation.

Your Lithionics Battery can be stored in the charged and turned off state for at least 6 months.

Due to the slow internal discharge it is recommended to check your battery at least once every 6 months and recharge it again to prevent a complete discharge while in storage.

If your battery is frozen below 32F (0C) while in storage, it will be neccessary to heat it up before charging. Batteries with internal heaters will self-heat once you turn the battery back on. Depending on how cold the battery is, it could take considerable time to self-heat until charging is allowed.
